Dr. Hughes said one youth told her, "When I am homeless, I don't even have a place to cry" [The Coast - October 15, 2009].
Phoenix is a Halifax, non-profit organization that provides valuable services to some of the members of this vulnerable population between the ages of 12 and 24. Phoenix Youth Programs range from finding emergency shelter and long term housing, to providing access to educational programs, counseling, medical attention and employment opportunities.
As the holidays are just over a month away, you can get into the spirit or scratch some names off your shopping list while supporting Phoenix at the same time.
On December 13, 2011 (11:45 am) the annual Nutcracker Luncheon will take place once again at the World Trade and Convention Centre. The tickets sell out quickly, but can be purchased online. "The three-course meal will include a main course of turkey," says Misty Cartmill, Director of the Nutcracker Luncheon Planning Committee. "There will be a festive set by Symphony Nova Scotia as well as carols with the Phoenix Choir". The kids in Cartmill's Organic South End Child Care Centre will also treat the guests to some Christmas carols and some youth who benefit from Phoenix programs will be there to share their stories.
The Phoenix Community Choir will also be performing at the Spatz Theatre (Citadel High School) with the Bishop's University Singers at 7:30 pm on November 26 and 27. The concert promises a repertoire that crosses many genres of music. The Phoenix choir consists of staff and clients that work with or benefit from the youth programs as well as community members. You can also purchase tickets online.
Perhaps the most meaningful way you can support Phoenix is to sponsor a youth for the holidays. Imagine knowing that your $150 donation will make a teen, who has probably been through hell and back, smile when they find something specially for them under the tree. The Phoenix Holiday Wish List also consists of items like bus tickets, stocking stuffers, toiletries, clothing, socks and gift certificates. Donations should be made before December 19.
