1. The Reverse Strip Tease: This has been the most effective exercise thus far, and it is not gender biased. It involves selecting a song from your old CD collection that you remember dancing to in your 20s or teens when you felt like you were on top of the world. In my case today it was Funk Soul Brother by Fat Boy Slim. After taking a shower, press play and begin to get dressed to the beat of the music. Jumping and hip jerks are a must. Reserve the slow part of the song for putting on socks. It helps if you pretend you are in the opening sequence of a movie.
2. Mindfulness Practice: This is something that I have been wanting to do everyday, but again I lack the whole discipline thing. Basically, it's meditation for dummies, although I'm guessing my coach would not like that label. If you can get your hands on a CD of a mindfulness "body scan" or "breathing space", do it. If not, it basically involves taking 15-30 minutes and letting your breath anchor you. It can also involve paying attention to each part of your body, imagining you are releasing air out of a "blow hole" at the top of your head and acknowledging when your thoughts start to wander. You might think this would put a person to sleep (I do it lying down), but it actually allows you to re-energize.
