Joshua Longley was inspired to transform their creative conceptions into a story book that he would present to her for the holidays. As the narrative evolved, it transformed into a YA novel that he decided to publish. And earlier today he presented a shocked, fully surprised Madeleine with the ultimate gift - a fictional book born out of her collaborative imagination where she is the inspiration for its main character.
Although it lacks the archetypal magic spells or vampire sagas of today’s tweens’ taste, Barnaby’s Buccaneers is filled with just the right amount of suspense and humour to appeal to young adults and their parents. The narrative describes the adventures of Madeleine, Sam, Emma and Oliver who, while attending Camp Barnaby set in rural Nova Scotia, become detectives to unravel mysteries surrounding bear attacks, arson and a sudden disappearance. They’re on to the McGlargle group, the evil development company that wants to tear down their beloved camp and turn it into an upscale resort.
Longley is particularly triumphant with his character development, from cranky camp cook Marge to the quirkily innovative Emma. The multifaceted personalities combined with the story’s chain of events make Barnaby’s a non-stop read.
Madeleine, who immediately began devouring the book says her mom, is not the only one that has the opportunity to read Longley's novel. You can order a copy online from Amazon.
